I have a 68 vette the key will not unlock the door I took the locks out and still unable to turn the tumbler, as you know this was a 1 year push button lock open no one I've found sells after market ones. Used ones are almost non existence. Can the tumbler be rebuilt I live in Spring hill Fl. If you know old time lock Smith. Thanks Ed

Re: Door locks 68 vette
The only way GM sold the ‘68 door lock push buttons to the public was as an uncoded lock. The GM part number for the service part is 3936223. Since the service lock is uncoded, that means the lock was intended to be coded to a specific key by the end user. Which means a locksmith can do it. That also means a used lock can be serviced.
Since that push button lock was a one-year only item, finding NOS examples of those locks is notoriously hard. If I were you, I would take your current locks to a somewhat senior locksmith and get an expert to try to make them work properly.

Re: Door locks 68 vette
Ed - Quick question, are you using the ignition key to try and open the door locks as designed originally? The 68 is different than later Corvettes that used a seperate key for the door lock and the ignition cylinder.
On my original 1968 door lock cylinders, there was a factory 4 digit "key number" that I was able to use to get the 6 digit key cut code and have additional keys made directly for the cylinder instead of making a copy of the copy. I wonder if your numbers are still visible on the lock cylinder you could use to have the key made?

Re: Door locks 68 vette
Thanks for reply. That is a possibility I thought of , I had a 68 afew years ago that had the same problem I soked them in wd 40 and got 1 to work, never could get the other one to work.. Never could find a lock Smith interested in repairing it.. The ignition key is a GM key and looks fairly old ,round key fits tire lock and back compartment doors. I'll keep trying to find a old time locksmith. Thanks again for the help Ed- Top

Re: Door locks 68 vette
Ed,
The roundish key for the tire lock and glove lock should have a letter D stamped into the blade. The door and ignition key should be octagonal with the letter C stamped into the blade. Something sounds very odd about your keys. Finding a good locksmith is the best advice I can give you.
Or look thru the DB FAQ page and read about how to post photos and then post some photos of your keys.
