I have learned a lot of things from John Hinkley. But here is one of the best tips that I am forever grateful for.
On the'57-'65 FI's I use his recommended water outlet gasket. GM #10105135. It's black and fits the contour of the water outlets perfect. It has a bead of sealant on both sides. You don't have to over tighten the two nuts or bolts to make a perfect seal.
John said as long as you get the outlet reasonably flat you will never have a leak using this gasket. Now I use my machinists granite surface plate to make the outlets perfectly flat. Not easy on a cast iron one. John D.
