    66 wheels

    Hello all,
I have been researching if my wheels are correct on my 66 427/390. They are silver steel wheels with the rings and center caps. They do have the "GM" "KH" stamps. From what i have read the wheels were black.

Does anyone have some good information for me?

    Thanks

    Mike

    Re: 66 wheels

66 had either "knock off" wheels with a "winged" center assembly or standard full hubcaps. Yours sound like a 1967 application with "beauty rings" and center caps.............

411656-583x437.jpegThe wheels would be black steel, and this is what the hubcaps for a '66 look like.......

The 1965-1966 Corvette wheels (GM # 3869156) are 15" X 5 1/2" and have no stampings oil the face of the wheel except maybe "GM", I forget. The stampings are on the inside of the rim that you can not see with a tire on the wheel. Attached is a drawing showing the cross section with with width measurement and offset.
The 3869156 wheels sold "over the counter" in the late 1970's and 1980's had stamping by the valve hole as well as on the inside of the rim.

Thanks Stephen, David and Michael for your help. The wheels that are on my car have been on it from when my Dad bought it in 1969. I guess the original owner put these on. This is why i have been searching hard for the build sheet/window sticker. I sure wish i could find it.

If you have the original jacking instructions sheet under the package board that covers the tool area behind the seats, it will be different for steel wheels with hubcaps vs. quick take-off wheels.

I don't believe 1966 had build (broadcast) sheets, that was 1967 and up.

Although the 'Tank Sticker' was ADDED in 1967, there were additional documents in the batch of printouts.
In this case (from an old Restorer article) this was similar to the 1966 'Corvette Order 7' (typically in the top/right corner).
But the Corvette plant ran out of forms... so they went over to the TRUCK side of the factory, and borrowed some of their blank forms.
Not very common to find the 'Corvette Order 7' (or similar), but some people have posted examples of these docs in the past.

What you are describing "silver steel wheels with the rings and center caps" are rally wheels. Rally wheels did not come out until 1967 application

What are the stampings around the valve stem?

In addition to what Russ has asked, where are you seeing the "GM" and "KH" stamps?
                        thx,

There's your answer. DC wheels are 67 rally wheels.

                              1966 Corvette Shipping Doc. Vin 2999 - 1.jpeg
This relates to the discussion of documents in this thread. Above is one of the sheets created for 1966 Corvette number 2999 in mid-October of '65. The delivery date on this Corvette was on 10/30/65 and it went to a GM employee who is no longer with us. I went to the selling dealer many years ago and was lucky to find this in their files. The "files" were actually cardboard boxes (one per year) in the attic above the showroom. They let me go up and look. ...Wish I had the sense to look for other Corvettes, as this GM employee bought a Corvette each year, and had each delivered to this small dealer. Yes, they are still in business, as "Hartway Chevrolet" now.
