Re: 1966 Muffler Black Out
I took on the challenge with high heat paint, a microfiber wax applicator, sponge paint brush and detailed brush. Here's the before and after trying to create a haphazard "mitt/mop" look.- Top

Re: 1966 Muffler Black Out
IT could have been an air over type sprayer, which works like a pump up sprayer, just a wand which emits a solid stream or fan, you can limit the amount and projection from a hand held wand by a constant air pressure over the "pot" a few pounds a narrow fan orifice and there would be no overspray, but would be an excess to run.
They used a hose supplied air over or perhaps a diaphram pump to supply the bedding compound for installing the fixed glass if not mistaken, something similar would work exceptionally well.James A Groome

Re: 1966 Muffler Black Out
James,
We have multiple photos showing someone using a sprayer, but, to the best of my knowledge, no photos ever of someone using a mitt. Yet the mitt idea refuses to die.

Re: 1966 Muffler Black Out
Don,
Without getting into the question of whether a mitt or mop was ever used, I think your summary is excellent. The only comment I would add is that a meticulously neat appearance of the blackout was a goal of the production line worker.

Re: 1966 Muffler Black Out
Closing this out, I thought I’d share how the blackout I used, based on the valuable input I received through this thread, faired at the recent Greenville Regional meet.
I purposely sprayed one side a bit more than the other, trying to replicate some of what my research showed. Different areas of application make sense when (assUming) two operators were applying blackout to their respective sides. This seems to be confirmed in post #16. Anyway, have a look at these pics. This blackout was accepted by senior level judges without note or deduction.
Hope this helps!
I like it!
Did you clean the mufflers with anything like acetone or lacquer thinner before spraying them?
And what brand and type of paint did you use?
