The article was originally written in 2008 when the CJ-4 category went into effect. The current CK-4 category wear test suit did not change, nor did the P limit.
CK-4 oil is vastly superior to the engine oils available when most vintage Corvettes were new in terms of wear protection, oxidation resistance, and other parameters. Some current CK-4 have much less than the P limit because their additive package includes newer Boron-based anti-wear additives.
So the P/Zn level is not the sole determinant of the oil's wear protection. Regardless of the additive package, all CK-4 oils have to pass the C-category wear test suite, which is a higher hurtle than the S-category wear test suite, and since both cost about the same, why buy a S-category oil and add a ZDDP additive?
I find that Walmart usually has the best prices on motor oil. They carry both the three major CK-4 national brands and their own SuperTech house brand, which is usually less expensive, so that's what I buy.
In ag country there are lots of house brands. As long as they have the API "donut" with CK-4 as the FIRST listed category, they are the real McCoy
