Hey Patrick, do you have a source for this convertor pipe that is under $500? I can't find anyone that sells a replacement pipe, if I have to go that way.

Are we talking about a catalytic converter/pipe assembly or another downstream exhaust pipe? I thought the question was about a catalytic converter/pipe assembly. I show that the catalytic converter/pipe assembly, left and right, are no longer available from GM. I don't know if this means that the part is discontinued or if it means GM is hoarding whatever stock they have left for warranty purposes.

If the car is still within the emissions warranty, I think the best approach to take with GM on this is to demand repair under this warranty. I don't see that they have any way out of this. If the car is out of emissions warranty, I think you're going to be out of luck. I don't think you'll get GM to do anything about it.

          Todd-

I have found that Magnaflow has available catalytic converters for your car unless you have the car registered in California for which they have no available converters. Apparently, they sell the converter/pipe assemblies only in pairs (left and right) and the cost is $3404 for the pair.

Todd, did you check your warranty book?

Joe it appears to be a convertor & pipe assembly.

            Patrick gmpartsdirect shows NLA. HERE

I use gmpartsgiant.com. They show as available, in stock L & R sides. HERE
            Note there's a $400 core charge each.

            Pass/Right 23373201 was 1942308

            Driver/Left 23373202 was 1942309

Note it appears the part # change does not follow the "odd# left, even# right" protocol.

edit again.... Another eg 23373201 here at gmpartswarehouse with only $100 core, but be careful as I've found their shipping charges are very high.

              Joe,

It is the catalytic converter/pipe assembly. I have been on the phone with the service manager at the local GM dealership this morning, explaining the clean air act regulations, (since he didn't know about it), and he informed me that the 8 year warranty was from the date the car was first purchased, which was Oct. 31, 3013. That means it is out of warranty by 29 days.... I have asked them to contact the zone rep to see what else can be done. I will let you know if they stand behind it or not...

Thanks Rich, I will use gmpartsgiant.com if GM won't stand behind the part. I did check the warranty and it is 29 days out of the 8 year window.

Todd you and I were typing at the same time....

Rats, 29 days? Ouch. But..... don't give up yet. Even though it's technically "OUT", here's what happened to me a about a year & 1/2 ago on my wife's 2010 GMC Acadia.(61k miles).

It had the Xenon(sp?) headlights, with GM's good faith extended warranty to 10 years due to defective internal housings for the daylight Running Lights. The DRL bulbs would melt the housings. It was 10 years and one month when I finally realized the warranty was extended, but too late. I was so angry at myself. I called my local GMC dealer, now Tasca, and he petitioned GM to help. I was not too hopeful.

The HL assemblies(upgraded to prevent melting) were $1,400 each, plus about a 6 hour R&R as the entire front end has to come apart to change them. Total about $3600 with tax labor etc. I was going to buy a aftermarket, but those were about $700 each. Plus me doing the labor. Argh.

My dealer Service Manager called me a few days later and got it approved for substantially less..... a $500 copay for the whole job. I immediately accepted the offer and now have 2 brand new HL assemblies and they did a great job.

While I was waiting for a ride from a buddy, I went in the showroom and drooled at the new pickups. A week later I bought a brand new Sierra. I give credit to the Service Manager and GM for going to bat for me so I felt good about buying GM again.

See if your dealer will do a good faith adjustment for you. It may still cost you but maybe substantially less. The only caveat is the times we're in as dealers are hurting as inventory is so low.

Wow, thanks for sharing that story Rich, I am pleased to hear how it worked out for you. I have a good friend at this dealership that is one of GM's top salesmen, and I have reached out to him for help as well. He has connections that I can't get to, and knows the regional service rep well. I hope they are willing to help, and will let you know when I hear back from them.

I don't know if it will help in your case but the warranty period extends from the date of delivery to the day that you first reported the problem, not today's date. So, if you first reported the problem within the 8 year period, you're covered.

Well, I finally got an answer back from the service manager at John Jones GM dealership in Salem Indiana. They contacted the zone rep, and he took it to GM, and their answer was "NO", the car is 29 days out of warranty, and they will not cover it.....unbelievable that they won't offer any grace.

Well, they need to draw the line somewhere. A couple of years ago, the internals of the left cat broke down and rattled in my 2003 SL500 with 12,000 miles. Aftermarket parts don't fit and MB sells left/right exhaust from manifold to mufflers as an assembly. Your estimate is a bargain compared to what this cost.
