    1959 Tachometer Noise

I hope you and your loved ones are well!

I finally hooked up my Tachometer mechanism by connecting the drive cable to my generator. The tachometer is making load noises and the vibrations could be felt in the steering wheel. The tachometer needle oscillates continuously. The existing drive cable moves freely since I could easily move it from the generator side. I also noticed the tachometer become more stable when I played with the cable from under the dash.

Question: With all that noise, could it be a tachometer or a cable issue. The cable is the original.

Thanks again for all your support!
    Tony

Tony,I would make sure that the cable routing is correctly routed if the bends are to sharpe it may cause the binding. Also did you lube the cable? PS I am not a C1 person, but know it’s a lot longer cable than previous gens. Which has more turns inside car, you also try using your battery powered drill/ driver to see how the this works. Spinning by hand may not be fast enough. Good luck.

Thanks Edward, I will look for binding and swapping out for a new cable may be a good option. Lube with regular motor oil?

Thanks again and have a great day!

          Edward,
I am pulling out the cable and checking for binding/issues and length. TBD

          Thanks again,
          Tony

Kable-Ease; $7.88 on Amazon. Recommended by many people on the DB.

                Re: 1959 Tachometer Noice

So I removed inner metal cable and noticed it was reversed, i.e., brass stopper on generator side. I removed inner cable and lightly lubricated it and compared to Eckler's replacement. The cables are exact length but slightly smaller diameter. I tried both cables in the correct orientation and still get erratic tach behavior and noise. The noise sounds like when I am forced to go shopping with my wife at a mall. My sound is internal, but you get the idea.

How tight do the cables have to be attached?
                Thanks,
                Tony

You most likely have a dry mechanism in the tach itself. Repair requires removal of tach. Try everything else first.

                    Mike,
That makes sense! We will make it year 27 without a tach...unless I change my dash pad this winter!

                    Thanks again!
