The question remains...what makes it a locking style? What's the mechanism. All these links only tell the reader the difference between GM style vs aftermarket style.

Now having said that Dave shared the following:
Locking mounts have a "T" appendage that prevents catastrophic failure.
So what does the T do that is not present on a non-locking engine mount? I think, looking at images it is some sort of catch.

In 1986 I acquired a one owner 340 HP 63 Coupe with 63K miles on it. When I pulled the engine in 1988 I heard a thud from something falling on the garage floor. It was the LH motor mount which separated at the rubber, the rest was still bolted to engine, no damage but scary to realize how frail the mounts were.

As I understand its functionality: The engine motor bolts to the block with the "T" appendage pointed upward. If the rubber breaks down, then the T slides but caught in the other half of the engine motor that is attached to the frame...avoiding catastrophic failure.

That's how it works. The two steel components of the engine mount (frame side and engine side) cannot "go their separate ways" if the rubber separates from either or otherwise breaks.

These old non-locking style mounts are "ticking time bombs".
