    64 ignition switch replacement

i got a new ignition switch to replace a defective one. old one came out easily.
problem is that new one will not go in . the new switch has 2 stainless washers and a brass light bulb mount. i think the bulb mount is the problem as there is another bulb next to the switch hole. my question is: are the stainless washers needed, and is the brass bulb mount supposed to be on the switch body?
    thanks for any help.

Are there 3 numbers embossed on the old switch? Can you post pictures of both?

the old one is 635. the new one is from corvette central as "replacement" with the light bulb mount and 2 washers. haven't got pictures. i think the old one is not a 64 switch, as i think the number is 630 on the correct one. am i right?

The GM replacement parts switch number was stamped 650 and the bulb clipped on to the switch. I believe 635 was the original part.

Personally, I'd look for an NOS or good used one if yours can't be fixed.

The 1116635 was the switch for 1963. NOS 635's are rare and expensive. I agree with Dan, look for an NOS 635 or 650 and configure it to look like the 635 you took out.

          I just called a buddy with a September 64, he has a 635 switch. A carry-over from 63.

that makes sense. this car was built in oct 63, so a 635 switch carried over. the switch is worn after all the years and i'm going to use the replacement from corvette central without the brass bulb mount, as it prevents the switch body from going in far enough for the threads to fully catch on the bezel. maybe i'll see if the 635 can be rebuilt if it is worth the effort.
            thanks for the advice.

Dick, Yes try to fix it yourself. Here's a tutorial on a few I've done. They're C1 switches but similar procedure on the C2 switches.

                Dick,

NAPA used to sell a replacement that worked fine and looked like the original switch.

                      Rich,

I think the lock cylinder KS6492 that Napa sell has the two lock release holes for Corvette and Buick (I think), instead of just the correct single lock release hole.

i checked out the napa ech ks 6101. it looks exactly like the one i got from corvette central.
may try to see what can be done with the original 635. it has a centering extension on one of the webs that fits in the back of the hole in the dash to keep it from spinning

i remembered that the two-hole face cap can be replaced with a one-hole version sold by Corvette Central, I think.
