On my 69 coupe, I have the original antenna. It has no plating on the mast, but appears to have peeling chrome on the base. Was the entire antenna chromed originally? Mark

Re: Was antenna chromed

I believe the ball end is also stainless steel but it does appear to be chromed. In fact, it's even a better stainless than the staff inasmuch as the staff is mildly magnetic while the ball is non-magnetic. Of course, the ball could be chromed non-ferrous metal but I highly doubt that.
The base and nut are definitely chromed steel. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

For some years I was making reproduction antennas that were matched exactly to 69 up fixed mast antennas and have disassembled and examined the base metals of many original (but wrecked) antennas and deplated the individual parts and here is what I found. The base is chrome plated steel. It was pressed onto the shaft which was stainless. The ball was chrome plated brass and was also pressed onto the shaft.
