    Re: 63 L84 oil pan

OK, I have to correct my observations of my 4 L84s. The third slotted dimple, smaller that the other two, on the drivers' side is there, it was hiding behind the oil filter canister and thus hard to see with the filter in place, sorry, thanks Don. Maybe the TIM&JG is intended for us old chassis judges that can't see behind that oil canister, and thus only see 2 on each side when you get as far under there as you can.....

I just got under the car as far as I could. On the drivers side, I could feel the three dimples. This is an original 63 pan on an April car. As I mentioned it has the nut plate.

      Cheers

        Harry
is this what the nut plate should look like? (other than viewing sideways)
Do other pans have a different way of holding the drain plug?

That's exactly what the nut plate looks like. It was GM #3723008 and was available from GM in SERVICE for many years. My original 1969 oil pan has that installed. Later pans usually had a simple hex nut welded to the pan in place of the plate. I have not seen this on early pans but it's possible they were used earlier. According to GM, most Corvette pans through 1974 had the plate. The presence of the plate can sometimes be discerned externally by a "vestige" of the internal electro welds used to affix the plate to the pan. However, with the pan painted this is difficult or impossible to discern.

Here are photos of an NOS GM #359942 oil pan [not for sale] which show the later, welded-on hex nut.

                Joe,
The large indentation at the oil dipstick is also an indication of a later or SERVICE oil pan.
