Re: Blackout on mufflers
I have a picture of a 65 going down the line with a great deal of black out all the way to where the down turn of the front pipe to the mufflers. I can not see the pipes is your pic. but I am sure they were the same through C2/3 era’s and maybe further. The idea was to hide those ugly mufflers and pipes from behind.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Blackout on mufflers
Ed, when you zoom into this photo of muffler you can really see the heavy duty dripping, some say it was a glove Mitt some say it was a heavy duty black out spray gun, so it wasn't a simple flat black spray can with a light coating .- Top

Re: Blackout on mufflers
Guys,
I am of the opinion that mid years are usually blacked out from the top side and it either dripped or got over sprayed. In regard to 70-72's I have mostly seen them blacked out on the bottom portion. I have seen what I believed at the time it was done on the assembly line and some
70-72's have been observed where the top and lower portions were received black out. I don't believe that was the norm, but its my opinion that there is nor right or wrong, or should I say typical or not typical."SOLID LIFTERS MATTER"- Top

Ron , they say the C2 or 67 in my case when going down the assembly line and just before the body got drop they spray the black out on a Down ward motion, I can't see the very bottom getting Black out sprayed that why the reason for heavy duty dripping down the muffler, but again who know .- Top

Re: Blackout on mufflers
It would be hard for me to be this sloppy on a restoration.
Since this is a September '64 Motor Trend, could this be a MY 1965? I wonder how the exhaust was revised from the year before...Mark Edmondson

Re: Blackout on mufflers
I don’t know maybe you can explain , heard if its true or not a pail of black out paint they had a mitt or rag and used that to black out the exhaust system from front to rear or was it sprayed on ??, here’s a 1967 427L88 front exhaust pipes looks like black out with a Mitt ?
Urban legend.
No mitt was used.

Re: Blackout on mufflers
No mitt! Here are a few shorts of where the mitt urban legend came from (my opinion)
Note when installing the rear end assembly it had already been "blackout" so when handling you got that appearance especially
on the 1/2 shafts.
And a example of an original 65 muffler- Top
