    Re: Blackout on mufflers

Hmmmm...why do you BLACKOUT the top when nobody can see that after assembly is completed? Seems backward to me.

Where in the assembly process did this "spraying" vs "mitting" take place?
    thx,
    Mark

          Hi Alan,

Assuming you were referring to the Database of Restoration Documents link provided below (copied from the database sticky post at the top), the last sentence on page 17 of the "Chassis Line" discussion (which apparently was the LAST step before Body Drop) states:
Spray chassis blackout paint on the outboard side of both mufflers. No mention of exhaust pipes here, though.

The next section "Body Drop" begins with the following:
Apply compression fixture to both tailpipes and throw over-centerlever to pull mufflers together so they clear quarter panels, place shiftlever in neutral.

So, it appears the opening photo is just after the compression fixture mentioned above was applied - meaning the mufflers had just been painted a step before...

The "Wheel well air-dry sound deadener/undercoat..." text you mention is on page 6 in the "Paint Shop" section of his discussion. thx, Mark

          thx,
          Mark

Thanks Mark, just could not find that when I posted, knew about it but unable to reference, (just assumed it was the pg 6 operation)
So now we know just where in production it was done.

Great information Mark, a lot of question's answered and clearing the air about the assembly process, thanks for sharing.

Alan I believe the pictures you shown here are of the 63 pilot line. I don't know how much of that lines practices would show up in the production line. The half shafts shown are smaller diameter than I've seen. Does anyone know if those smaller half shafts made it in 63 production?
