    Another 72 LT1 renovation question

    19 LT1 underbody 4.jpg

The photo attached is of my 72 LT1 (body off renovation progress photo). The previous owner changed the original OEM muffler with a Magnaflow muffler. I really don't want to replace it. Please advise the consequences in judging.

Did you by chance work for Hessell Chevrolet in El Segundo, CA back in the seventies?

Hi Duke, Yes I was Service Manager at Hessell Chevrolet in the seventies. Do we know each other from there?

Appears that the complete exhaust system was replaced at one time. Comment based on the configuration of the bends in the pipes.

Yes, this system has a few changes from stock, including the welded front pipes, the mufflers, the welds for the mufflers and the material.

So, it's going to lose most/all muffler points and 25% of the system points, plus a few more.

Hi Dick, thanks for your reply. I concur that the mufflers and exhaust pipes have been replaced. While I'm attempting to restore this LT1 using best practices, I probably will re-utilize the replaced exhaust components. Thanks, Fred

Depends on your goal for the car.

Yes, I was in the Air Force at the time and was buying a lot of parts for my SWC at the parts counter. I also had a Cosworth Vega that your service department worked on. It consumed a lot of oil, and I arranged with GM to have a local Cosworth engine rebuilder make new valve guides on warranty for it, and you guys did the head R & I.

I still own both the SWC and CV, which spent about 9 months in the Petersen Museum a couple of years ago.

Welcome aboard. How long have you owned the '72, and have you owned any other Corvettes over the years?

                    Hi Duke,

Wow that was a long time ago. I don't specifically remember your Cosworth Vega, but they were special.

After leaving Hessell Chevrolet, I did a stint as an area service manager at Chevrolet's Los Angeles Zone Office (zone 15).

I acquired this 72 LT1 Convertible (w/ac) about 2 years ago. It was a complete (running), matching numbers car that needed much TLC. We (my son and I) have undertaken a body off restoration. We're in the final stages of the restoration, hoping to complete it by September. As far as the other Corvettes I've owned: 56, 59 and a 67 coupe (wish I would have kept them all).

Are you still in Southern California? Here's a link to some of the progress photos of the LT1 renovation https://photos.app.goo.gl/T1zMi4VWjEWhBPxU6

Nice to hear from you, Fred

Our goal is to be evaluated in the Top Flight category. In researching available OEM style exhaust system replacement components, we're considering using a Southern Car Parts C3 OEM Style welded 2 1/2 inch replacement system. Are those component acceptable under NCRS Top Flight consideration judging standards?

$100 says they don't make them, they resell them.
There are only a few companies that actually make them, and none of them are completely correct.

                        Your options are really two.
                        1. Corvette Central manufactures and sells an aluminized system with the mufflers welded to the exhaust pipe. I believe that Allen's does as well.
                        2. You can buy a system from Gardner's which is somewhat better configured but you have to have the mufflers welded to the exhaust pipes on your own. This system is available in aluminized steel or in carbon (plain) steel. Note that this system is closer to original, but still not completely correct as it is currently sold.

My thought? If you're going to drive the car, wait for CC to have a "free shipping" sale and buy theirs. Paint the underside of the mufflers black, install and enjoy. The Gardner system costs twice as much without giving you twice the points.

Fred, I also recommend the system from Corvette Central if you’re going to replace yours. I installed the complete 2 1/2” aluminized system on my L82 and I was very happy with the fit, function and sound. The system judged well, standard deduction for aluminized system, but I think that was the only deduction I received. Also worth the wait for the free shipping offer if it’s still available. Good luck.
