There are two reasons!

1. The statement that "I know my 63 is original because I bought it from the original owner"!

Answer: It's only 57 years old and all original water pumps last that long!

2. The 63-64 Judging Manual is incorrect and nobody wants to fix it again!

Answer: It's not incorrect cause it has been changed about ten times!

Joe has a point, when I purchased my 64 (in 1967) it had under 30K miles on it and water pump had been replaced already.

As I've said many times before, the 5/8" shaft waterpumps used for all 1955-70 small blocks are not particularly long-lived pieces. If one gets 50,000 miles of service, one has done very well. Many fail well before 50,000 miles.

For 1971 and later GM went to 3/4" shaft waterpumps for small blocks (big blocks were always 3/4"). They did not do this because the 5/8" shaft pumps were just as good.

When I say shaft size I am referring to the size through the bearing. The impeller end of the shafts for both small and big blocks was always reduced to 5/8".
