      Patrick,
As regards your radio problem, the first thing you should check is your two speakers. I just went through this on my wife's `69 with the radio making no sound whatsoever. Gary Bosselman told me the original speakers failed often. Getting at them requires removing the sill plates, then the kick panels, but you can probably check them for continuity by just unplugging them from the radio harness and using your DVM. Both of mine were stone dead. Gary recommended a company called Electro-Tech up in Minnesota for replacements, they make an exact fit speaker. Anyway, with two new speakers the radio works just fine.

Mike--You are right that these speakers fail simply as a matter of age. Both of my speakers were dead and were an open circuit measured by an ohm meter. But I also bought a GM 10 ohm 4x6 speaker with a current part number recommended by Joe Lucia and replaced the right side speaker. My radio was still silent which convinced me that the radio had gone bad before the speakers timed out. I sent my radio today to Precision Stereo Repair based on their ad in the Driveline.

Patrick, congratulations on finding an alternative method for the radio removal and thanks for posting it. I may try it when my radio returns in a few weeks. Good luck with the rest of your project.

This thread is labeled '70-'72. For these years (and beyond) speakers are mounted in the dash. The RH speaker is fairly easy to access by pulling the RH dash. But the LH speaker involves pulling the LH dash which is considerably more work.

I believe Mike is describing speakers mounted behind the kick panels- a la '68-'69?

Yes, the 68-69 speakers were behind the kick panels. However, their quality and longevity were about the same as later.
