    63 Storage heartburn

Just posting to have everyone in the north check their cars when stored for months over the winter.

I finally got under my 63 that has been up on the lift since November. Not pleased.

    1. Gas on the underside of the fuel pump, so after many hours a new pump was installed.
    2. While working on the pump I noticed a leaking rear wheel cylinder, so after hours a new wheel cylinder was installed.
    3. While working on the wheel cylinder I noticed a trailing arm shim fell out, so after some time I repaired the shims.

I can't wait for my first ride to see what else has failed.

Just an FYI, check your cars close after storage.

    Love this hobby.

How in the world does a trailing arm shim fall out? To where had it fallen? And what does storage have to do with it?

63s have unique trailing arm shims. They are not held to the vehicle by anything but luck. Essentially designed to fall out. I need some now. As a matter of fact, all 63 s can be followed through the forest by the trail of trailing arm shims they leave in their wake.

Dave, the oil pan is for the other car.

              Harry

Put a set of snow chains on it and drive it year round. LOL One of the advantages of living in the south is that we can drive year round.

Mike, Thanks for asking, but I located an original in perfect shape. I'll put it in when I replace the rear main seal. Hopefully this week.

I'm getting the garage floor done and I need to stop the leak.

                    Harry,

I have several 63 trailing arm shims and would like to know how to detect they are broken before I go trying to repair them? Don't want to ruin a very rare 63 unique part! Thanks!

Please supply a pic of the broken one please!

JR, it did not break. It just fell out. I put it back in and tightened everything up again.

It is my understanding that original 63 T/A shims are not slotted and the trailing arm front bushing bolt goes through a hole in them (which makes rear alignment troublesome) and they shouldn't ever fall out.....the later slotted shims not so much.... Is this wrong ?

My 63 came to me with incorrect slotted shims but they were well tucked down into the frame cavity and even when the poly bushing some owner put in blew apart I didn't lose any...

                            Frank,

1963 trailing arm shims were slotted originally. There was even a TO showing how to drill and install a pin to keep them from coming out. The pin went thru the frame but later the shims only had a hole for the bolt to prevent them from falling out while enjoying the ride.
