GOOD Question. See other discussions of the A O Smith green (search for "zinc chromate") metal parts.

Answer: I would assume black, especially if you have an S (for Saint Louis) body number on the trim tag.
I am going with black on my current A - (for A O Smith, Ionia Michigan Made) body. Will later add some under-coat spray, also black, on the side that shows behind the rear wheel.

      Louie,

Years apart, but here is a color photo from December 1980 - those metal parts were black.
