    C1 59 wiper motor

    Hi all,

I'm cleaning/repairing the wiper motor of my 59 vette.
Last summer I had some issues with it and saw that the resistor was getting hot and was producing some smoke, now it seems to be broken.
I can't find a replacement in the catalogues online so guess I will need to replace it by an modern resistor but don't know the value of this one, ohm and Watt, is there somebody here that knows these values?
Have already checked servicing and assembly guide without succes but might have overlooked it.

    Thx
    Geert

Geert, Here is a reference internet post with the value that appeared to work.

C1 & C2 Corvettes - C1 wiper motor resistor - Hello does anybody know the value of the speed control resistor of the wiper motor ? The one on mine is broken and i would like to replace it with a modern resistor Thanks in advance Jean-Luc

      Richard,
thx for the reply, found it, just can not find a resistor with that values here and have no clue what tolerance i can allow on this... will continue the search 😀

        Re: C1 59 wiper motor

Working on a wiper motor that also needs a new resistor (no slow speed) and was wondering what if anything you might have found? The original is a 30 OHM resistor and size (in the case) is a constraint. I have not found the exact resistor referenced in the post (from 2013) currently, but see a few that are very similar, but with slightly different values.

Possibly someone who had theirs rebuilt and this part replaced could share that info with us.

Dan, Maybe Paul Maxwell has the info you need. He restores these. Iirc he advertises in the Driveline.

            Dan,

I did eventually found a resistor in France with a company that sells components for speakers.
Will see this evening if I can find the details.
But after installing it I didn't got the desired result, wiper was working but without power, probably more things wrong than just the resistor.
So I decided to have it restored so I've send it to Steve Hackle to be overhauled.
Unluckily he has some health problems at the moment, but hope to have it back soon.

              Geert,

Thanks for your reply. I have the motor running smoothly and the switch mechanically functioning, so I know it works on and off at high speed and parks properly.
I ordered some resistors that I think will work if they fit. Got the old one out, did not need to further disassemble the switch. Here is a photo on the work bench of the repair in process.

That's a thought if I can't make it work. I matched the OHMS and wattage (I think) so it's a question of size now.

                  Re: C1 59 wiper motor

Just to update the outcome for anyone interested, I found a suitable resistor and installed it on the switch and all is working perfectly now. I test ran the motor for several minutes and there were no issues.

These switches are very fussy though and I had to spend some additional time adjusting it to get it to consistently park from the slow speed. I enjoy a rainy day bench project (once in a while ), but time wise especially if you don't like to do this stuff, it's better to send the motor out for $200 or so. Also, as a bonus, I was also able to get the windshield wiper coordinator that it came with operating again after disassembling. A good day!

Dan, Just a word of caution. Bench test with the cable attached.

Rich, had not thought of that. I tried to duplicate the minimal range it can move when installed and still get it to work properly. I think that is what you are cautioning about. I'll double check it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes I had a motor rebuilt by one of the pro shops and it wouldn't shut off. I had to readjust the switch contacts after installing it. Pulled it out again, disgustingly, pulled cable out of the dash, then hooked it up on the bench.

                        It wouldn't shut off.

After adjusting switch contacts again per ST-12 procedure, all good. Back in the car and it was fine.
