The same casting was used for a 2 bolt and 4 bolt block. The only difference was the machining and bearing caps.

Are you saying the two bolt case had the openings for the oil cooler fittings?

The two bolt blocks had the bosses cast for both holes just like the 4 bolt blocks. The only difference was that hole over the oil filter was machined with a smaller pipe thread than the hole in the 4 bolt block, and there was no machined hole in the forward boss on the 2 bolt blocks. If the castings were not the same, they would not have the same casting number.

You are correct. Every 427/454 I ever saw had the 2 bosses as you describe. There would be no reason to have another pattern for a 2 bolt & a 4 bolt casting. They are just machined different. PS I have seen one that was being made a 4 bolt in a engine machine shop. Not that hard to do.

So the 4-bolt case can be externally discerned by the hole that is tapped and plugged above the oil filter?

WRONG, my bad. I don't know what I was thinking, but it obviously wasn't correct. Thank you Patrick et al

A picture is worth many words. Thank you again Ed.

And there are a few two bolt blocks that have had post production machining and have the plugs there. I know nothing

That's correct Dick. Any competent machine shop can add them therefore this isn't a definitive indicator of a 4 bolt main block.
