Yes it can be removed, the procedure is probably in the service manual. Briefly, remove the spare tire tub, hose and wire connections on tank, then there are two straps holding it up. I am probably forgetting some detail (possibly need to remove the filler neck on a coupe?) but it is fairly easy. Good luck, Don H.

      Michael,

After removing as Don outlined, there is a crossmember on the front bottom of the tank that has to be removed. Four bolts to the frame and your on your way. Would not clean the tank. They don't cost much so I would replace the tank with a new one.

It absolutely can be done. The Garage Squad removed a split window tank on jack stands during one episode..

As mentioned above and not too hard to do with jack stands, just be sure to drain the gas tank first. Without the weight of the fuel (or water) it's not too bad to R&R. One strong suggestion would be to give serious consideration to replacing the tank as long as you are going to the trouble of removing it since it has been sitting that long. Replacements are not expensive. and it's bound to have rust after 30 years of sitting outside. Dan

I had to reuse the original gauge locking ring as the one that shipped with the new tank was loose after it was installed.
Typically the sending unit is also junk.
Test the sending unit, even if it's new, before installing. Don't ask how I know!

The tanks get condensate in them and rust from the inside. At least if they are not stored full, and no one stores them full.
I would also replace the hoses on both ends of the main fuel line.

There will be no tank sticker on a 1964. That did not begin until mid-1967.

Do yourself a giant favor and replace the tank. The 68 I currently own was found in a leaky garage after 20 years. The gas tank was toast. I saved the old one in a bag because it has shreds of the tank sticker on it.

two things where plenty of eye and face protection when dropping the tank. you wont believe how much dirt is on top of it. Second. once removed throw the tank away and buy a NEW tank from Quanta Products is Rising Sun MD. for a little over 200 bucks you will have a perfect NEW tank ready to last anther 50 years of service

I suggest carefully checking your original tank for corrosion before automatically replacing it. My last 2 65's, from Ca., had absolutely no corrosion inside or out and were in perfect condition. No replacement required.

remove the filler neck which is fastened to the top wall of the tank, before trying to tilt the tank down and out. by all means, replace the tank if there is any rust in the bottom. also, if u insist on using old one, check for pin holes where the asphalt anti squeak material was in contact with the tank all those years. as mentioned previously, the chines sending units are junk. i heard someone is restoring original sending units. perhaps others have that contact info. mike
