1970 Round key re-key spare lock or glove box ?????

The round key on my 70 is MIA, Do I buy a spare tire lock with key (repro) and rekey the rear storage box

or get a lock smith to key the storage box and then rekey a used spare lock to match the rear storage box?

Bob,
Unless I am misunderstanding your situation, there is no reason to buy any new locks if you are just missing the key. Any locksmith can take the lock cylinder out and get the key number and simply make a new key.

Removing the storage compartment lock is easiest by far.

And it's also very easy to remove the cylinder from this lock without a key. Takes about 10 seconds. The spare tire lock needs a key to remove the cylinder.

OK 10 seconds to remove storage box lock I sure don't see any key number a lock shop can use.
So, now buy a used spare lock and take them both to the lock shop? I will let you know how that goes

The cylinder needs to be removed from the case. That's very simple. I have taken many out without a key. I'm working from memory here. There are 2 openings behind the bezel. One will look empty. In the other you will see one shiny steel tang and some brass tangs. They are all spring loaded. First depress the steel "locking" tab. The cylinder will come out slightly. Then depress each of the brass tabs (these are the tumblers) one by one and the cylinder will come out. Work slowly and carefully so as not to allow the tumblers to go flying out. The numbers will be stamped in this cylinder. If this is beyond your comfort level, then bring it to a locksmith and they can easily do it.
