I recently purchased an N.O.S.ignition coil for our 1965 Corvette. Can a coil go bad just from age sitting in a unopened box. I now realize I should have asked this question before buying. Stupid me. Thanks, Duke

Re: Can an N.O.S. Ignition coil go bad
Joseph, i been through at least 5 repro. coils before i got a good one , it's a hit and miss even if you check the coil's primary and secondary winding are in proper Ohms specs. there made in China and box in U.S Delco box's it start the car after running for a couple hours or less the car start acting up and coil start getting hot and breaks down.- Top

Re: Can an N.O.S. Ignition coil go bad
Hi DANNY,
The one in the car is a repro GM authorized Chinese piece. So far it has worked okay. The one I ordered is a genuine N.O.S. coil in a sealed GM box. Your thoughts on the Chinese is why I ordered an NOS piece. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Duke- Top

Re: Can an N.O.S. Ignition coil go bad
Hey Duke,
I think that the primary reason that coils fail, is due to vibration and heat cycles. That said I know of many bad coils that fail out of the box, which I believe is manufacturing defect.

Re: Can an N.O.S. Ignition coil go bad
Failure rate for NOS coil will be a lot less than the stuff being made today. It's a real test of one's diagnostic skills to replace what you believe to be a bad electrical part with a new one from the box and have the problem persist. Replace it with another new part, experience the same problem and you're really scratching your head. Unfortunately, today it's not uncommon to go through several new coils, relays, etc., before finding one that works. QC on the offshore electrical replacement components is awful.- Top
