Re: 65 under hood "J" clips
1965 AIM UPC 11-15 Sheets B5 & B6 has some information which may help.....
Sheet B5 shows rivet 455624, but Sym 3 in the Revision history states "Rivet added 3 places" ... 9-23-64.
Sheet B6 shows "Bond B" at the 3 clips, but also pictures the rivets at those 3 locations. Also a Sym 2 about rivet added 9-23-64. However, Sym 2 isn't shown on the page, at least I can't find it.
Since 1965 production started in August of 1964, early cars likely just had the 3 clips bonded, and after some AIM revision to production floor lag time, the clips were then riveted.
If riveted, I think it would have to be done before the top surround was bonded to the firewall. I'm not sure if the rivets could be installed on a assembled/bonded body. My research shows the 455624 rivet as a soft aluminum rivet, reference post with a rivet photo Here.
Pictures of early/late cars and their clip attachment method would obviously help.
edit....added AIM page scans.

Mark: are you sure that your 65 is an October 64 build?
GM had a nation wide strike in October 64;

Re: 65 under hood "J" clips
I just checked the trim tag and it is B29 which is September 64. The cars birthday build off assembly line was mid November. Many of the parts on this car have September and I believe some October dates.Murray you are correct as the strike was somewhere around September 25 1964 to November 6 1964. Now that this question is opened as to how these j clips in 65 were fastened, I'll check a few other cars. It may help if anyone listing how the clips are held to also mention if the body is St. Louis or AO Smith.- Top

Re: 65 under hood "J" clips
Keith I just noticed the second half of your question which was about the hood gutter clips. I need to put my cheaters on sooner. The 64 St. Louis and 65 AO Smith I believe are put on with adhesive. The 67 St. Louis used rivets- Top

Re: 65 under hood "J" clips
These photos are from an early March A O Smith coupe. 1965 #11843 has a "H1" body date. There are four clips, and each is attached with the same type of phillips head screw - looks like an integrated washer. What do you call a round head with a flat washer included ?

Re: 65 under hood "J" clips
I believe we may have to clarify the original question. Keith Brodbeck asked about the j clips on the firewall area and the side gutter clips. Attachments would vary for the two areas for a given car depending on year and body plant. The examples compiling are helping to cover the C2 variances. Any 66 or 63 owners have some input?- Top
