Re: 1967 Corvette L71 Running Hot
You can go up to 40 as long as it doesn't detonate, but you MUST VERIFY the max centrifugal RPM value. You said it has 36 @ 3000. Did you rev it up to 4000-4500 to verify that it no longer advances?

Re: 1967 Corvette L71 Running Hot
The problem with most mechanics/"engine builders" is that they only understand/care about WOT engine operation. Road engines have a much broader operating range - essentially an infinite number of speed/load conditions. They don't understand vacuum advance and why it is necessary for efficient operation at other than WOT. A dragster only operates at idle and WOT for a few seconds... a completely different animal than a road engine.
Read my tuning seminar. It explains why in great detail.
It sounds like your spark advance map is now close to optimum and maximum cruise advance (initial plus full vacuum plus full centrifugal) in the 50-54 degrees range is where it should be as long as there is no detonation.
