    Re: rusty bolts

Any recommendations on removing a original ferrous metal transmission fill plug (pipe plug) that has bonded with the aluminum transmission case? I am talking about a '64 Muncie 4 speed here, trans is in the car.

Suggestions I have been offered include heating the plug with a butane torch - but not to the extent that it is cherry red; hit the plug with Freeze-OFF for a good bit of time; and, going through a few cycles of Freeze-off, followed by heating it with a butane torch, then cooling it again rapidly with more Freeze-Off.

I haven't tried any of these yet - but will unless someone can offer a better option. I have tried a wrench and an extension bar, to get more torque on the plug, with no success - I am at the point where I am beginning to round off the square edges on the plug.

What happened with the ATF mixed with acetone? Someone posted tests and it was supposed to be the best for rusted bolts.

I have used ATF and lacquer thinner, very excellent penetrant, but it does take lots of time soaking.

When removing body from my 66 I tried every lubricant and heat some worked some did not. I finally used my dremel to cut most off the heads off the body bolts. had to as the cage nuts began spinning in cage. Cut the head off off the cap screw 6 or 8 cuts and chisel it apart. bumper bolts cut off with a saws all

Spray something on them loosen them up. The use a long (5' to 6') plumbing pipe over a pull bare to barely move the bolts. They'll come free.

You have to be VERY carful not to force the bolt because you stand a good chance of pulling the taped threads also. Soaking in Kroil & patience is your friend when taking out rusty bolts.

I've had very good success with Kroil ("the oil that creeps") in all kinds of
applications over the last 20+ years. I just stay patient and keep soaking those threads.

Sometimes I use a plastic pipette to inject it into specific areas. Good Luck!
