The original production parts were definitely painted. The service parts were plated. We did a lot of research on these before we went into production. As far as the NOS black filter goes, I have never seen one, or even heard of one until now. As far as I can tell, they were production only parts. Kind of like the oil filters that were installed on production cars were different than the service parts. One factory rep told me many years ago that was intentional. If a vehicle blew a motor with 30,000 mile on it and the production oil filter was still in place, the owner had a lot of explaining to do!

Interesting, I was wondering why the rubber seal on my C6 oil filter was red. Now I know......

Thank you John for your years of experience.

Thanks to you also Joe Ray. I have seen early NOS filters that had no notch on one end and a slight notch on the other end.
I never owned a NOS black filter Mike Johnson. Nice. Thanks, John
Early '63 FI's are the hardest to restore dead nuts as we can't get some of the lines for them. The fuel filter to the 4657 pump and the filter to the FI inlet fitting should be bare steel. Like a new brake line in the old days. Impossible to find.

So the conclusion is that the silver filter is also painted even though the metal can is already silver. Seems like an odd extra step before silk screening the red but perhaps it was for corrosion protection.
