Tach Pegging At 60 During Idle On 56

After 34 years, I finally got my 56 running. At idle the tach pegs at 6 grand. We took apart the generator and everything seemed to work fine there. The cable seems to be working on each end. It worked fine 34 years ago when I started the restoration. I am thinking that there might be a problem with the tach? May I please get some advice on this situation? Thanks! Mark

Disconnect the cable. After 34 years of sitting, and 28 years or so since it was built any original grease will have the consistency of wax. Or there is grease inside the speed cup, causing it do deflect as the magnet spins. It needs to be rebuilt. If you leave it hooked up, something will break and add to the cost of the rebuild.

Have you tried to spin the cable with a drill?

Yes, I did spin the cable with a drill; and it would come up from zero with that method. Thanks!

Thanks Mike! I was originally going to go into it; but decided otherwise. Your advice has been taken. Mark
