    Front Spindle Dust Shield

    Hello,

I just cleaned the front spindle dust shields also called brake backing plates on my 68 and have PN 3898011LH and 3898012RH.
From the NCRS technical manual these are not from a 68, would anyone know what year they as i can't find it on the net?

    add picture and correct PN#'s

    thanks, Joe

GM #3898011 and 3898012 are the part numbers for the front brake rotor shields used for 1968 Corvettes.

By the way, I should have mentioned that the part number seen on the front rotor shield photo in the Judging Guide is for a 1969 Corvette. For 1969, the front shield part numbers were GM #3953423 and 3953424. These same shields were used from 1969 through 1982.

The 1968 shields are one-year-only. They are designed to accommodate the 65-68 spindle and the 68-82 1/2" steering arm bolts. No other year model Corvette used that combination.

        Thanks Joe,

I'm using the 68-69 4th edition technical manual which only mentions the numbers below.
Also mentions the finish as unpolished zinc, believe the 68 should be white/silver cadmium.
I guess a dull silver would be good enough for judging as long as they're not painted black, gold, etc?

1968 shields were "dull" zinc. Very few "silver-colored" plating of the period was actually cadmium. In my opinion, no one can discern cadmium from zinc plating without doing chemical analysis.

Hmmm. Another thing to add to the 68-69 TIM&JG.

I don't know how I missed this during my review of the manual. However, the manual is not incorrect as it stands. It just omits the 1968 difference.

Yup. Looks like we listed the 69 numbers and not the 68.
Only took 4 years to find out we omitted it.

I'll get it added if/when another revision gets done. Good information that should be in there....
