    What is this?

    Hello All,
I found this laying in the body next to the driver's side louvers just in front of the vacuum tank on my '69 small block, A/C car . I was wiping down the car to put the cover on and my hand moved this piece that was laying there. Anybody have an idea what it is?
    Thanks for your help.

I cannot find anything similar anywhere close to that location on my '68. Good luck.

      Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. I figured it out. It is called a "SHIELD" and it is riveted perpendicular to the bracket that holds the windshield washer bag on A/C cars. I have no idea what it shields but there it is.

Do you know where that shield is located in the AIM?

Jeff'y Sounds like it is missing. Was there another shield on the vehicle? Could it be the installer simply gave up?

            Dale,
The item is shown in the '69 AIM in section C60, page E4, item 7.

              Tom,
The drawing in the AIM shows nothing attached to the part and it is simply riveted to the fiberglass. I'm pretty sure that it was put there to "shield" the w/w bag which is black vinyl on one side and some sort of white canvass looking material on the other and is hung on a rack which allows for the bag to move around from rubbing against the edge of the fiberglass and wearing a hole in it.

Interesting. It would be informative to see a photo of one on a car.

It's GM #3954252 and is clearly shown in the AIM's, even as to configuration. It was used from 1969 thru 1972 for Corvettes with C-60. However, how it serves as an effective shield for the w/w reservoir is a mystery to me. It was discontinued from SERVICE in April, 1979.

I wonder how many of these things that GM ever sold in SERVICE? There was likely just one manufacturing run of these for both PRODUCTION and SERVICE. If so, the SERVICE inventory apparently lasted from 1969 until 1979. I'll bet the SERVICE inventory of these in 1979 was pretty much the same as it was in 1969 and GM just decided they were not going to continue to take up warehouse space, even as little as they required, any longer.

                        Patrick,
I will try to take a picture of it when I glue it back on.
                        Joe,
I can see what the intent of this shield is. There is a sharp edge of fiberglass structure right where the bag would hit when the car is in motion.

This not the best picture because it is in a hard to get to location but this is the best I could do.
