There are an absolute plethora of GM part numbers for alternators and starters used across all GM car and truck lines. However, there is really very little in the way of differences within a particular series (e.g. 10DN, 10SI, etc.). For example, virtually all 10DN cases, front or rear, are functionally interchangeable. Internal differences are primarily limited to stator and rotor which vary depending upon alternator output. Any 10DN or 10SI alternator can be converted to a different output by changing the stator and/or rotor. The other difference involves clocking of the case halves. There are 4 possible clock positions of the case halves depending upon a particular chassis installation. Up to 4 different alternator part numbers can be created for alternators that are functionally identical except for case clocking.
The same sort of thing is true for starters.
Also keep in mind that for alternator or starters that have been through commercial rebuilding operations, the part number stamped on the unit means absolutely nothing. Commercial rebuilders disassemble alternators and starters to their component parts and build up rebuilt units from bins of parts. So, part number stampings on these units are absolutely meaningless. If one were to look up the original application for a part number found on a previously commercially rebuilt alternator or starter it will almost certainly have no relevance to the application for which the unit is presently configured. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Starter and alternator part numbers
Another book that is pretty good is "Catalog of Chevy V-8 Engine Casting Numbers 1955-93 and Stamped Numbers". It includes starters and alternators. ISBN 1-880524-13-9. It is put out by Cars & Parts Magazine.- Top

Re: Starter and alternator part numbers
There are also FOUR time periods covered by CHEVROLET BY THE NUMBERS. Alan Colvin's data therein include the Corvette applications AND other non-truck Chevrolet usages. You have to buy all four to cover the full range of model years Mr. Colvin researched. See Amazon.com, where I think they are go for about $28 each. (I believe all the Corvette By The Numbers information is also in the four others.)

If this is a stamped number that you are getting off an alternator case, then you now have 1 TOO FEW numbers in the series. There were no 6 digit alternator part numbers like the one you mentioned. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
