Re: 64 fuel tank question
a new tank is around 200 bucks. how much is your time worth trying things that might not work and if its not clean can cause headaches later down the road. just replace it. it will be cheaper in the long run- Top

Re: 64 fuel tank question
Keith I was thinking the original style tanks maybe somehow the originals were some how different in the total gallons, the originals were 18 gallons, I done think the repro tanks are 18 gallons. also I thinking that maybe the originals may have different baffling ? but I am going to study if they are different.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

The replacement tanks are exactly like the originals made by the same company with the original logo stamped into the tank. Give it up and get you a NEW tank.

Re: 64 fuel tank question
as usual, I agree with JR in that the current repo tanks can't be differentiated from originals. I might add that GM over the counter tanks from the 70's and 80's were different from original c-2 tanks. mike- Top

Re: 64 fuel tank question
If your going to do it any way because we all know that these cars take a bit of work to keep the cost down, I might suggest carb cleaner if you have it. I only find that Berrymans works on that stuff.
The acetone may do the trick, but I have carb cleaner in 5 gal buckets and a gallon would do it and then could be re used on other parts when done. I used it in motorcycle tanks to clean them and it worked like a champ. In your situation you will have the tank O-ring swell with carb cleaner. Don't think the acetone would hurt it.

Re: 64 fuel tank question
Correct. Beginning about late 1969 GM discontinued the C2 tanks and replaced them with the C3 tanks. These are slightly differently configured and all have an integral pressure/vacuum valve. No original 1963-L69 Corvette was originally equipped with a tank with an integral pressure vacuum valve. Functionally, it's not a bad idea to have one since it allows the use of a sealed type fuel cap.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
