C-3 1970 Oil Filler Cap Embossed Discription
The new 1970 1972 NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide (GREAT DOCUMENT!!) Oil Filler Cap picture on page 92 shows the script on the cap as Engine Oil Fill AC-FC2 for the 350/300. My cap which I'm almost certain is original having owned the car since 1972 reads Engine Oil Fill Cap AC-FC-77. Otherwise, the cap is identical to the Guide photo. I know it's possible with the dozens of oil changes done by multiple facilities over the years the cap could have been switched. I'd appreciate information on the cap I currently have. The original 1969+ caps are usually, if not always, AC FC-2 embossed. However, I have seen other apparently identical caps with other AC type number embossments used on other GM cars of the period (FC-77 might have been one of them; I do not recall). So, it's possible that one of the other caps might have been substituted at some time.
Here's what I would say: if the engine still has its original paint and the paint on the filler cap matches the rest of the engine, then I'd say there's no question this cap is original. There's just no way that some guy at a one-time service station or, even, GM dealer service department was going to install a new cap and paint it to exactly match the existing engine paint.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

Thanks Joe...The engine was repainted when rebuilt in 1994 and more recently during a multi-year frame off restoration. And for several years the engine had 350/350 aluminum valve covers to enhance the under hood appearance with the oil cap in question firmly affixed to the stored original valve cover. I recently had the car judged by the Mason-Dixon Chapter (great job guys) to obtain a "roadmap" for finishing the restoration. The car lost points due to the incorrect valve covers but easily corrected when the original painted covers are installed. Just curious if the cap will pass inspection.Comment

I "harvested" a bunch of these caps many years ago from a "self-service" type wrecking yard. I got them from many different GM cars of the 60's/70's period. Many were FC-2 embossed but some were of other embossments. FC-77 may have been one of them. I do recall that some were of 2 digits. I recall that I could not discern the slightest difference in these caps other than the embossments (and, the color because many of these caps were from Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac engines from the days when each division had its unique engines and unique engine paint colors). When I get home in several weeks I'll see if I can find them. I recall that I had them in a brown paper bag but just where that bag is I'm not so sure right now. The used parts I have are not as well stored or inventoried as the NOS stuff.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

I'll throw this observation in as well as the 1973/74 revision team presents at least three different base motor cap configurations...I'm concluding here that multiple suppliers were used from 1973-79 for base motor oil caps. Any validity to this thought?

On my way to Las Vegas, stopped for the night. Terry, remember the last time we drove through Denver? Did it rain just a little??? Same thing today, torrential!!! Going to find a different way home !!!
Anyways... In my years of judging, I can probably count on one or two fingers the number of base motor 70s I have seen. Nobody brings them out for judging, so you you don't see any. Working on the 70-72 manual, I had to rely on the guy with the worlds largest collection of base motor cars :-) Patrick... Since then, I bought a base motor 72, will probably be the only 70-72 base motor in Las Vegas. Watch !!! The worlds rarest car !!
71 and 72 has the rubber plugs, which I think continued into 73 and 74 ??? The painted valve cover 70, has the twist in cap, like 68-69.
Would love to see a picture of one. anybody? I know Joe is AWOL!!

Yes, for 1973 they went back to twist-lock oil filler caps for small blocks. Big blocks never went back, though. They were rubber plug right through 1974.
By the way, as most folks that have them know, the rubber plugs are miserable. They harden over time and become very difficult to install and remove. For that reason, I'd be surprised if very many found on cars are original to the car.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

Attached in the photos below are two AC-FC-2 caps. The one of the left is NOS (GM # GM # 3835655) and the red one on the right is from a 1970 Camaro SS (Tonowanda engine). Both are stamped "ENGINE OIL FILL" and "AC-FC2".

Thank you. Notice the difference of the center rivet? The NOS rivet is almost a perfect circle and the other is not.
