Depends where you are standing... More seriously, look for a diagram, in your GM service manual or perhaps on line. Make sure you are looking at a Chevy V8 diagram.

    Looks something like this.
these things are a deceptively simply but necessary component on your engine, they range from the cheap stamped steel, and non adjustable versions to the much nicer adjustable versions, ONE basic thing youll need to know is where TDC, 90,180,270 degrees are located if and when you get involved...

I belive this picture incorrect. It should be to the left when looking from the top.

Now, you've raised my curiosity. Where's your vacuum advance line? There doesn't appear to be a nipple on the end of the vacuum canister for one.

              Leif,

It's an L88 distributor it has no nipple.

Check the AIM. The few I have seen show the clocking of the distributor relative to the engine center line and placement of each cylinder's wire in the cap.

Contrary to Tom's photo, the VAC points 3 o'clock and #1 wire goes in the terminal over the window for most C3 big blocks (maybe L88 is different.). The perspective is looking down on the engine, with the front at 12 o'clock.
