I can't think of anything else.

Not really you need a complete electrical circuit to read anything at all. The amp is parallel in the circuit. Take off the ground at the battery and it reads NOTHING. IN FACT THE WHOLE CAR IS DEAD.

The amp gauge in a C2 is in what is called a "Shunt Circuit" and has noting to do with completing the circuit.
There is 12 Volts on both gauge wires if you check them with a volt meter.
Your statement is true on some old cars. However it would also requires large wires with the ability to carry the full current load of the automobile.
Check out the wire size on the C2's amp gauge. They are the same size as the wiring that runs the turn signal bulbs.

I think you are saying the same thing. The “shunt circuit” is not completing the circuit.....agree. What ever The circuit the amp gauge is reading has to be a complete circuit or else there is nothing, no flow, dead. To have a complete circuit it needs to go back to ground. That’s why no draw and no reading when the battery negative is disconnected.
