Then someone replaced it previously, either on purpose or by mistake. All other 1970 Corvette engines were originally equipped with a 180 degree thermostat. The LT-1 was the exception. Why? Well, the LT-1 was the only 1970 Corvette engine that was equipped with the air injection reactor (AIR) exhaust emissions control system. GM always specified a 195 degree thermostat for AIR-equipped applications. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I run this in my 70 LT1. Actually in all my cars. These are well worth the money.

This is the "Robertshaw"-type thermostat. I use and recommend this type, too. However, I use only a 180 degree version. Using a 160 degree can result in too wide a temperature swing. A corvette cooling system can usually not maintain a 160 degree temperature except in unusual conditions (e.g. very low ambient temperatures, long downhill grades, etc.).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
