You beat me that was what I was going to say. The upper ball joint can be viewed without moving the dust shield. I for one do not remove or move any item during judging. Also to add some clarification "Survivor" judging is done at a different Corvette event. The NCRS has Bowtie judging.

That is true, but to inspect the upper part of the upper ball joints for the correct configuration of the ball joint itself and the rivets the dust flaps usually needs to be untucked for a clear visual even if it is done by the owner.

Ron, That's what a mirror is for. There is a specific list of items that an owner is asked
to remove in advance of judging. The dust shields are not one of them.

Jim, yeah I know what mirrors are used for and used them all the time, but to actually see the seven well spots, the configuration of the rivets, I have asked the owners to untuck the does flaps. I never once had an owner give me a hard time or not cooperate.

Ron, IMO it is not an issue of whether an owner objects or not. NCRS instructs judges to treat owners in a specific manner so they, the owners, are the same no matter where their car is judged.

Yup I know the difference between "survivor" judging and "Bowtie" since my car has both. I was using the term survivor generically. My point is if you are frequenting the judging scene and there are no deductions for tucked or untucked dust flaps don't abuse the old flaps and just leave them untucked. I'm not a Judge and have no idea what they are responsible for doing or not doing. All I know is I had to replace my flaps regardless who caused the issue. Moral of the story leave them alone if they are originals.

I would just like to make a comment.

I own a VERY original and unrestored '63, a future Bowtie candidate.
My dust flaps are now 55 years old and are extremely hard and brittle.

If a judge asked me to untuck the flaps, I would have no choice other than to say no.

I agree with you and no owner should be asked to untuck their flaps.

I wouldn't want anyone untucking my flaps if they were hard and brittle.

Page 170 of the new 1967 Judging Manual 7th edition says the flaps are TUCKED exposing the top of the shock mount.

Anyone asks me to show 'em my flaps, there's gonna be trouble!
