Re: Manual steering box lube
GM used to sell a tube of special grease, I think 10 oz., that was specifically for the Corvette steering gear. It's long discontinued so use a synthetic NGLI #2 grease like Mobil One and pack the housing to near full.
Synthetics base oils have lower vapor pressure and are more resistant to oxidation than conventional base oils, and since the steering gear is close to the exhaust manifolds it runs hotter than on pass. cars, so you need high oxidation resistant base oils in the grease, and the lower vapor pressure means it won't "dry out" as fast.

Penrite makes a 1200w oil. Comes in a small bottle.

Re: Manual steering box lube
Danny if you use gear oil it will leak, new seals or old. Mobil 1 separates badly and will also leach out red oil- I stopped using it years ago because of that problem. I use Lucas green grease now in boxes and haven't had any issues with it.- Top
