I'm pretty sure that one of the changes by the C2 era was to shorten the tail shaft and housing. The '57 transmission is a lonnnnng sucker.

The '66 and later transmissions actually weren't too bad to drive since first gear was circumcised. I still have at least one early (1961) 3-speed sitting on the floor of my garage. Don't know what I'll ever do with it.

I'm pretty sure that there were no "half moon cut outs" on the side cover of the 1957 4 speed.
