Have you worked on cars in the past Jill? I've also got a 59, never worked on cars in the past aside from a carb rebuild or two and have been doing most of it myself, but I didn't dare take on the engine rebuild. I tend to break things lol. Very cool pics!

Kind of. My husband has always loved cars and we started collecting very young. It never bothered me (like it would my girlfriends) because I always knew where I could find him...in the garage - lol. In 2009, my mom had a stroke which caused me to stay at home on the weekends to take care of her. I basically had no life outside of the house (other than my job) and I told my husband that I wanted to work on a project together...maybe something we could sell. Our friend, who had done some work on his Jeep tub that he kept in our garage, had twin girls. After that he didn't have much time. He sold his 76 Jeep CJ-5 (in boxes) to me and I completed a frame-off restoration in 9 months of weekends (equivalent to 72 days). That way, I was able to stay home to care for my mom on the weekends and have a gratifying project to work on - I must also say that it was a great stress relief. Needless to say, I still have the Jeep because I didn't have the heart to sell it after it helped me through a difficult period in my life. I also loved it because I could drive my own vehicle to our local car shows. It meant I could play in the sandbox too. While I was working on my Jeep, my husband asked me what I was going to get next to work on, I told him "I'm going to buy me a 58 Corvette." After that he started looking for one to purchase. I still had my Jeep and we were at our local Saturday night car show and up drives a truck with a 59 Corvette on a trailer. I couldn't believe my eyes. My car show friends basically poo-poo'd the car saying oh my gosh, that's just too much work... All I kept thinking in my head was "Oh my gosh, look what I could do." I was able to make a deal with the seller and here I am today... Also, because we have been collecting through the years, I have always helped my husband with anything he is restoring. He loves old WW-II military vehicles (jeeps, etc). He has taught me a lot about working on cars and when I bought my Corvette, I told him I wanted to do the majority of the work. I estimate that by the time I'm done, I will have completed around 80% of the work. It has been a great story to tell.

Thanks for letting me tell you a little bit more about my story... I enjoy telling others about my project (as if you couldn't tell). Last year, I worked at a safety company where I was able to show my coworkers how I work safe - with all of my Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - I gave them a brief slideshow and a lot of the men and women in the audience were in awe. I think I impressed the men and the women seemed to be really inspired.

Very nice job Jill. The body on my 59 was probably in a little worse shape than yours and I still have not gotten as far along as you have.
We look forward to the completion of your project.

Jill - When you removed the paint did you find the org colour of the Corvette in green crayon on the trunk rear wall - years ago when talking with Nolan Adams he told me where to look / scratch and sure enough there it was "char" - great pictures and story - line

                      Hi Keith.

Yes I sure did. My "TURQ" was big and bold on the rear passenger bulkhead. I didn't have a lot of history on my car and I have thoroughly enjoyed putting the story back together these past 5 years. Another interesting item found in my journey was an old For Sale sign that must have fallen inside the passenger door. It's the image that looks like the crumpled piece of paper. The writing is very faint. It's in a zip loc bag now and I'll be trying some techniques to try and read the writing from a marker.

More painting progress over the Thanksgiving weekend. It's coming out really nice. The only painting left is the white cove and blackout. I'm in the process of color sanding before the buffing progress. Some color sanding was done today but we focused primarily on the cove areas to prep them for painting next weekend. The weather these past 4 days here has been perfect painting weather, especially for lacquer. And next weekend's forecast is supposed to be just as nice. I can't wait to paint the coves to make the color "pop"!

                        Enjoy...

                            Hi Peter.

I purchased my paint (acrylic lacquer) and reducer (slow lacquer thinner) from TCP Global (www.tcpglobal.com) in California. When I ordered my paint, I called them every time instead of ordering online. I'm glad I did - the first time I called to order my paint, they reminded me about ordering the reducer which I was forgetting because I was so focused on ordering the paint. You may sit on hold for a little while, but it's worth it (to me) to talk with someone. They also have color swatches for your specific year online so you can look all of the needed information up prior to calling to place your order.

I have a UPS Store mailbox which I get all of my packages sent to and, since my mailing address is different from my physical address, they asked me to scan and send copies of my driver's license and credit card I was charging to for my very first order. I don't particularly care to send that information over the net, but that was the only way they would approve my order. Since my mailing address and physical address information has been verified, I don't need to go through that process any more. Just thought I'd give you a heads up about that in case you have a similar setup for your package deliveries. It usually takes about 4-5 business days to receive your paint order.
