Progress on my C1 (59) - Meeting a major milestone...

Met a major milestone this weekend...finally applied paint to the body and multiple other components - trunk, hood, decklid, etc...

I'm finally getting close to completing my frame off restoration. I've been working on this project since March 2013 and am really proud of how it's turning out.

Attached are pictures of my progress.

    Enjoy...

Wow Jill - you put me to shame, take my hat off to you for not only bringing a Corvette back to life but keeping the hobby going, with enthusiasm - keep the pictures coming through at the later stages (fiddley bits) - I feel proud of you and I don't even know you - Girl Power Rules

You should be proud, the car looks great. Doing it by yourself is a real challenge but looks like you've mastered the craft.

I think Vinnie should do a Restorer feature on you and your car. An inspiration to all.

Outstanding! Was that a blowup paint booth I saw? What can you tell me about that?

Thank you Bill. Your body looks to be in fairly good shape (much better than mine was when I acquired it). It's been a fun project, but I think the fun is really just beginning.

Thank you Keith. I'm happy to be a part of NCRS - it's a great honor. There are so many helpful members on the site. I have thoroughly enjoyed working on my dream car project. I never in my life dreamed that I would ever acquire one and truly have the chance to perform a full-blown restoration project. It's been a blast!

Thank you Richard. Early on, I met some local legends - Gary Summerville and Roger Bradley - and they have provided a lot of guidance throughout my project. In fact, I have heard them tell me several times they are happy I have the desire to learn because it really is a dying breed. I'm glad they (along with other NCRS members) have taken the time to help me. It is a great honor.

                          Hi Rich.

I can't wait to start the assembly process. I'm planning on color sanding this weekend then applying more coats of paint afterwards to completion. There are 10 coats on now and I plan to add a few more so there will be plenty during the buffing process. After color sanding and applying the final coats of color, I will paint blackout in the needed areas and apply the undercoating. Then will start assembly - adding wiring harness, applying trim pieces, etc. Oh yeah, I still need to break in my engine before putting the body in place so that will be my next big milestone. That is all the fun part. Lol. But....the most fun part will be driving it for the first time since I've acquired the car - that's when I won't be able to wipe the smile off my face for at least a month...hahaha

                            Hi Robert.

Yes it is a blowup paint booth. We bought it on ebay earlier this month (new) from someone in Florida. It works great when it's not so windy. The outside dimensions are approx 15x30, and the airlock is approx 4x15 (included in the overall dimensions). It has 2 blowers - one for keeping it inflated and the other for airflow. There is another blower tube that we don't utilize that helps inflate it faster. It fully inflates in about 5 mins. It does take a while to set up - so far it has taken about 1.5 - 2hrs to set up. We blow the driveway off and lay down a large tarp that we purchased to put under the booth to protect it from any elements. We use buckets filled with water to help anchor the booth and have also purchased pet anchors from harbor freight to help keep it anchored in the ground. We also place another tarp inside the unit where we are painting to keep the floor clean for future uses. The booth also has large charcoal filters - 2 going from the airlock into the paint area and the other 2 where the air exits on the sides (they are black in the picture). The airflow is just enough to keep any dust from settling or swirling around on the pieces we are painting. The car will also fit in there on the rotisserie. There is more clearance in the front and rear of the car vs the sides. The sides are a little close and we figured we could move the car where we need to while painting it in there. We had planned on painting the car Saturday but the wind was blowing so hard that we couldn't use the booth or even paint outside. We ended up painting on Sunday and Monday and painted the car outside under 2 popup tents as you'll see in the pictures. It was a perfect day for painting outside. We opted to not use the booth for the car because of the time for set up. We had to wait for the temperature to reach a good point (we had a cold snap the night before) and didn't start painting until approx 11am Sunday which wouldn't have given us much time if we would have opted to set up the booth. We do like it though and plan to use it for future projects that we have waiting in the garage. As a backup plan, we purchased one of the quiet Honda generators in the event our power went out while painting in the booth - that way we could switch to generator on the inflatable side to keep the booth from deflating. Also when it's time to deflate, it takes minimal time to come down. If you're wondering why we didn't go with a conventional booth, we opted for the inflatable method due to the cost and space as compared to something permanent. This is what works for the Space we have now. We are planning on building another large shop and have been talking about keeping a dedicated space for the inflatable booth so we can make it available when we need it and we know it won't blow away if under cover and protected from the wind and other elements.

I hope this gives you the information you were looking for. If you have any other questions just let me know.
