Mike - what is the Build date of your car? You may not need the shields if it is late 66 car...

Attached are pictures of 1965 396 spark plug heat shield as installed on an NCRS Duntov/Bowtie car with 26K mikes, VIN 1764x and a 1965 396 BG Survivor. Notice the welded seam at the very bottom of the shield that runs the entire length. The '65 396 car that I restored VIN 2216x had the same heat shields on it when the car was purchased in unrestored condition in 2002. The car has been through all level of flight judging as recent as 2014 with no deductions on the heat shields. As Gen Manno mentioned have them zinc plated and you will be good to go.
