Making progress on my 66 SB Roadster. The body is nearly ready to head off for paint. Exciting times!
I've owned the car for 21 years and had real enjoyment out of it with my family, teaching each of the kids how to drive it, cruising with the wife and even driving Route 66 from Chicago to LA and back with my son! This car is a member of the family and I now have the chance to give it a long needed restoration to prepare it for the next 20+ years of fun with our family.
I'm not planning to have it judged. That being said, I'd like it to be as close to the original Trophy Blue as possible while having the durability of base coat/clear coat. The issue I'm seeing with my first sample of the color is that the metallic is very pronounced. It's what you'd expect to see on a modern car but not on a mid-60's Corvette
The PPG "equivalent" of Trophy Blue is actually a Jaguar color called Crystal Blue. I have two sample plates that have been sprayed Crystal Blue, one with PPG Deltron 2000 and the other with PPG Shopline. Each sample plate (actually license plate blanks) is 1/2 base coat and 1/2 base coat plus clear coat. While you see the metallic on the base coat side of the plate, the metallic becomes really pronounced on the side with two coats of clear.
I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to mute the metallic in modern paint (if that is even possible) or of other paints that people have used for Trophy Blue base coat/clear coat that I might try.
Thanks in advance!
