    Trophy Blue Paint Suggestions

Making progress on my 66 SB Roadster. The body is nearly ready to head off for paint. Exciting times!

I've owned the car for 21 years and had real enjoyment out of it with my family, teaching each of the kids how to drive it, cruising with the wife and even driving Route 66 from Chicago to LA and back with my son! This car is a member of the family and I now have the chance to give it a long needed restoration to prepare it for the next 20+ years of fun with our family.

I'm not planning to have it judged. That being said, I'd like it to be as close to the original Trophy Blue as possible while having the durability of base coat/clear coat. The issue I'm seeing with my first sample of the color is that the metallic is very pronounced. It's what you'd expect to see on a modern car but not on a mid-60's Corvette

The PPG "equivalent" of Trophy Blue is actually a Jaguar color called Crystal Blue. I have two sample plates that have been sprayed Crystal Blue, one with PPG Deltron 2000 and the other with PPG Shopline. Each sample plate (actually license plate blanks) is 1/2 base coat and 1/2 base coat plus clear coat. While you see the metallic on the base coat side of the plate, the metallic becomes really pronounced on the side with two coats of clear.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to mute the metallic in modern paint (if that is even possible) or of other paints that people have used for Trophy Blue base coat/clear coat that I might try.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mike,

Look at DuPont Chromabase Basecoat paint as my 67 was painted with this and its held up very well. Touch up/repairs blend in very good with this paint.

I work in the collision repair business (as a Painter) for 30 years, my 66 convertible is Trophy Blue and my jobber got me a PPG DBC formula that matched what little I had left of the original color. Amazingly on the windshield post also, I haven't paint my car yet but did paint my rear deck hatch hinges and did a spray out card and was happy with the match. Give me until Saturday and I'll PM you the formula or the PPG number I have to check if they did any changes to the standard formula (I believe its a Mercedes color).

        Mike,

You might want to reach out to John Ballard. He might be willing to help you get the best match and answer your questions. His experience in paint goes beyond the scope my brain can handle. He would be the first person I would reach out to regarding paint (not that he even knows my name). I'm sure someone has his contact information or you can look him up using this site's member list.

Good luck and I love that color!

You can find John B's contact in the front of the Restorer or on this site, he is a Regional Director. Also listed is Tom Ames, he is the NCRS National paint & body guy. Either is very knowledgeable about paint. Good luck, Don H.

Mike I emailed you the formula as it was modified from the Mercedes color, I purchased a pint of PPG 13199 Lacquer and it wasn't even close to my original paint on my windshield frame. I suggest getting a half pint mixed and doing a spray out card to see if it's a close match to your windshield frame. Sincerely Brian
