    65 BB transmission questions

I am looking for some clarification on my 396 transmission numbers.

The NCRS shipping report on my car shows the production date of 6/21/1965.

Drivers side of transmission has an assembly code P0513.
    Drivers side cover code 383170
Vin stamping number matches the car Vin number

Passengers side of transmission has an assembly code P0622
    Muncie casting number 3851325

    Bell housing number is 385840

Can somebody please clarify the meaning of the 2 different assembly code numbers and how they work with a car build date of 6/21/1965. All opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Wow, never seen this before. May date works, June date ?? Maybe a mis-stamp on the 6. L78 option should not matter, most L78's were built in late May thru end of July

Never seen an assembly code stamped on the drivers side. Both my 65's, SB & BB, have the assembly code stamped on the PASS. side. The only thing stamped on the drivers side is the VIN and the metal tag attached to the side cover. SB car built 4-10 is stamped P 03 29. BB car built 5-5 is stamped P 04 19.

Rich, lets see the stamps on both? might help determine what happened.

              Re: 65 BB transmission questions

I think the date on your trim tag is the date the tag (for the body) was made. Does it differ from the NCRS supplied date?

Could someone in the factory (St. Louis, not Muncie) have added the P0622 on 6/22/1965?

I'd like to see the VIN stamping.

It looks like trim tag shows K21 which i think is June 21. One thing i was looking at is the 65 Judging manual on page 221 refers to numbers on both sides under the for reference only section.

The body build date of June 21 and the shipping report showing the same date is possible but only with St. Louis bodies. My body date is May 4 and a shipping date of May 5.
Page 221 in the Judging Guide states that the assembly date is on the pass. side and the VIN on the drivers side. It says nothing about an assembly stamp on the drivers side.
Please post a pic. of the VIN stamp that's on the drivers side of the trans.

The judging guide page 221 says that all base manual transmissions have the assembly code stamped on the drivers side. Is the base transmission they are referring to the 3 speed manual transmission? I have attached the vin stamping

Yes, the base trans. was a 3 speed and not available with the L-78. A couple things about the VIN - it's very lightly stamped for being in aluminum (mine are very deep) and both of mine, and all that I've seen, are stamped so they are read from standing behind the trans. Yours is the opposite. Minor details I know but BB Corvettes, especially 65's being very rare, are commonly faked. I'm not saying yours is but that trans. does raise some questions.

                            Re: 65 BB transmission questions

The P date on the machined polished surface - driver side is-was a 1964 Muncie Pdate.
This does have some of the coding that is hard to make disappear and validates it as a 1964 Muncie Main case.

Also - that main case was CAST January - 3rd week, and would not be typical to be until May 13 for this to be used for production.

Worse is how does this get a 1965 P date of June 22 for a car build June 21???

Very likely in the history someone did not see that or know what it was and put (re-stamped) the P date on the pass side...
