    Help with heat/ign shield for 69 L46

    Guys,

I've read the very helpful prior posts on this subject but still have a couple of questions on the topic. I have attached several photos to help illustrate my issues.

    1) It isn't clear to me in the AIM on the boomerang shielding where the front part of that shielding bolts to. It seems to be a perfect fit to bolt to the rear motor mount bolt but wanted to clarify.

    2) Are the plug wires meant to travel in/behind this shielding as much as possible? If that is the case it would seem the plug wires would need to travel behind the boomerang shields and then pass between the motor mount and block. Is that the case?

    3) I purchased a set of restored shielding and was given two pieces with the round hole that I believe is meant for the water temp unit. Prior posts have indicated which one is correct for the water temp unit on my engine but it would seem I need a different one to replace the extra water temp hole shield I have. Thoughts?

    4) The AIM calls out three different part #'s for the plug heat shields but I only have two types in the restored set I purchased. the prior posts have mentioned that the "V" style one that is intended to go above the water temp unit doesn't work and I used the same style heat shield at the water temp unit as I used on the right rear as the prior post instructed. Is the final verdict that the "V" style shield is incorrect and this is just a flaw of the AIM?

    5) Are the vertical dist box mounts (shown) and plug wire brackets (not pictured) all supposed to be orange? I'm fairly sure they are (since they are listed in the AIM as "engine" meaning they came with the engine) but wanted to be sure before I painted them. Also, I would assume they were painted on the engine so they're attaching bolts are also painted, correct?

    Thanks for your assistance,
    Mike

    1) Yes

    2) Yes

    3) The lower shield in your photos is correct. The other shield is for the right rear on 1970+

    4) "V" shaped spark plug shield will not work. Use the same shield as used for right rear.

    5) Distributor shield support brackets were painted engine orange.

Excellent. Thanks Joe. So I assume the bolts holding the brackets and plug wire holders were painted as well, correct? Also, one of the plug wire holders has a removable grommet while the other appears to have been "plasti-dipped" on the end. Do you know if it was dipped before or after painting? What I'm getting at is should there be overspray of orange on the plastic or should the plastic go over the orange? Thanks.

Yes, the manifold bolts fastening the supports were painted engine orange.

The plug wire holders were installed at St. Louis and received no engine paint. The one with the 4 hole grommet was painted semi-gloss black. The one with the plasti-dipped end was zinc plated.

Thanks Joe. While searching for the correct RFI shielding, I noticed in the CC catalog that there are additional wire clips that can hold two wires that appear to bolt under the same bolt used to hold the boomerang shield and the heat shield. It's listed in the attached pic as part # 471143. Can you confirm that this is correct? Thanks.

Yes, even though the diagram you posted is for a mid year, 1969 also used the plug wire guides shown as "471143". These were GM #3744408 but they are discontinued.

Thanks Joe. Can you tell me where they were mounted? I cannot find them in my AIM, although I did remove two of these from my car, which, surprisingly, had much of its RFI shielding still intact on disassembly. I cannot remember where they were mounted though.

They mount to the same bolts that retain the spark plug heat shields.

Got it. That's what I figured. Thanks.

                    Joe,

Do the plug wire guides go to the front heat shield or the rear? Please see attached photo.

The wire guides go on the FRONT plugs, each side. The 2 front plug wires should go through the front end of the "boomerang" shield and BETWEEN the motor mount and block.

What are the torque specs for the heat shields? I can't find it in my AIM.
