Starting My Oil Change Projects>Here Is the Cost Of PF35L's & Mobil1 15W-50 Synthetic

FWIW: Thought I would pass this along to the members.

PF35L's-Bought 5 through GM Parts Direct for $55.91 (Shipping Free)

Mobil 1 15W-50 Full Synthetic-Two Cases (10 Qt.) through Walmart for $49.19 (Shipping Free To Store)

All and all didn't think this was all bad. Comments?? Thanks-Larry

Strange choice of oil for a flat tappet engine.

Not the cheapest but it'll work just fine...

Great minds think alike. This is exactly the filter and oil I use in my LS-5. I also get the oil at Walmart, but source the PF-35L from Amazon for about the same price.

I'm considering Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w-40 because of the lower winter viscosity. My reasoning is it will flow more quickly during cold cranking. It has the SM rating for spark engines and good levels of P and Zn. It's a couple bucks more per 5 quarts at Walmart.

Given the limited use of these cars, the gentle manner in which they're generally driven and the abbreviated time between changes, I question the benefit of any synthetic oil.

Wallyworld's house brand CJ4 is usually half the price of Mobil 1 since cost seems to be the point of the post..

I'm impressed that you were able to get free shipping from GM Parts Direct. I usually end up ordering from other vendors since their shipping prices are typically very high. Maybe location, location, location?

FWIW - I attempted to run Mobil 1 50-50W Oil in my 50 year old BB and leaks appeared in many areas that never leaked before. Put Dino oil back in and all the leaks disappeared. Mobil 1 is not the oil of choice for vintage V8's. - Beware.

Jack: Yes they had a code to put in at "checkout" and gave free shipping for orders over $50 and also gave me
                a small discount. Larry

Like manyt generalizations, not generally true. I'm sorry you had a problem with your engine leaking. I've used a variety of synthetic oil brands in a variety of old engines without issue. But this may depend on the condition of the engine's seals.

Most viscosities of Mobil 1 (really most off the shelf oils) do not have adequate levels of ZDDP. The 15W50 proposed is one of the few exceptions.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w-40 is another.

Last time I changed oil in my other Chevrolet car I used Mobil 1 10W30 to get it out of my inventory. I have been using 10W40 diesel
for years in it. A leak, but only drop developed. I will be changing back to diesel next oil change to see if leak stops. Cannot see where the leak drop occurs from. A drop also occurs from the oil plug, will use a new gasket next oil change. Did not have the drop problem using diesel 10W40

C-category oil is not available in the 10W-40 viscosity range. You mean 15W-40. Other available ranges are 5W-40 "synthetic", 10W-30, and various single grades; 15W-40 is the most commonly available at auto parts and big box stores and is suitable for consistent cold starts down to about 15F, so it is most suitable for most vintage car driving environments.

Comparing 5W-40 to 15W-50: All else equal, which would provide faster protection during a cold start at 30F?

I don't think it makes any difference. A 5W will flow more easily, but there is sufficient oil in the bearing during cranking and initial start to prevent any bearing damage before normal oil pressure is achieved. Guys worry and obsess over engine oil waaaaay tom much about engine oil.
