    Water Pump gaskets C4

I see no gasket cement on my C4 water pump. I see the after market pump installation memo not mentioning the adhesive . Is this necessary to hold the two gaskets on the block or is it for water imperfections in the castings. Also is silicone the adhesive to use or special water pump only glue?

Indian Head works great; I've used it for years. However, I don't think I'd use it for waterpump-to-block gaskets. That's because if you have to remove the waterpump again, it's going to be a miserable chore to clean off the sealer. Instead, I'd use a silicone RTV which Permatex makes explicitly for cooling system applications. And, I'd use only a VERY THIN film on both sides of the gaskets.

Whatever product one uses, I have found putting it only on the water pump is an advantage for the next replacement. That practice makes the cylinder case easier to clean as most of the gasket material usually stays with the removed water pump. If desired, the water pump is easily cleaned on the bench. I have never had an issue with a water pump leak, but I also look up the torque specs and use a quality torque wrench.

If I owned a C1 with the engine mount front plate between the water pump and cylinder case I might reconsider my practice, but that is not a factor for me.
