    Window Regulator question

Getting ready to reinstall the door window mechanisms and I noticed that the two arms opposite the sector gear (which appear to be pressed on) are tight on one regulator and relatively loose on the other one. Are the loose arms a concern with smooth window operation? Is there a way to tighten them up?

    Keith,

I'd lubricate the tight joint with a light oil.

That loose joint? It should have a specific angle when pressed together. Those 2 arms(short/long) should not open or close with respect to each other. If they do, the internal square locking tabs are worn and may need to be opened up by grinding and reassembling.

If the 2 arms are properly angled, but loose with respect to the main arm, you could snug up with a few hits with a hammer against one end of the clamping head, with the opposite side on anvil or vice table. Don't go too much though as to make it too tight. A few hits at a time and check between hits.

Just took a few pics of a old one from my '62 for reference.

Thanks Richard. The two arms are fixed in position with regard to one another but are rather loose on the main arm. I thought that I might whack the clamping head to see if I could tighten it up but wasn't sure if that would do the trick.

Whacked them good on a vice with a BIG hammer and it didn't seem to make any difference....

Keith, Typically there is so much play in window regulators by design, so you may want to use it as is. I think your only other option is a replacement, but you may not even notice the difference while "cranking" after completion.

I agree. If the guides and runs are securely in place, then the window should follow along I would think.
