Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

The article you are referring too is about 1960 Chrysler letter car. Chrysler used the same type of pump and lid as 1958-62 used, the pump nozzles are different sizes and the numbers on the pump are different. Dad ended up rebuilding the pump for the author of the article.

Hi Jay, Thanks for posting. I saw your PM attempt last night was blocked as my Inbox is full. I'll clear it.

So it makes sense now....I have wrong parts. The Seller I bought that from always seems to do that to me. I finally learned my lesson long ago but I got this unit before school was out. I'll drop you a PM with my contact info.

        Thanks,

Joe, Thanks for the info. As I recall years ago, it's interesting that you got your Power Top system working, but the Washer system appears to have given you even more trouble.

Frank, I recall you got yours running on the '61 and was a challenge. Good links for info too. Thanks.

As far as the rebuild kit, it included all of the gaskets, however 3 were missing the day I got it, and Ecklers shipped them to me separately. The 3 that were missing were the 3 that fit between the pump housing pieces.

Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

Jay and I had a nice talk last night. Thanks Jay!

That stainless steel 3-legged chair/stool does not belong in this pump. The white plunger rests directly into the upper pump housing. The stool is used only on earlier (1956) pumps.

Now I can reassemble the entire system.

Richard When you have time can you take a look at the rebuild kit 651078 that Corvette Central sells to see it is complete or missing parts also.

                Thanks again Bob

Bob, yes that's it. It includes the same parts as the one I got locally at Ecklers. One more note....the large spring at the bottom of the image. I told Jay that the one in the kit is a stronger spring than the one that was in the pump plunger(long white part with the spring on the end). jay said to use the original as it's a bit lighter and the stronger replacement spring may be a problem. The small spring is identical to the one in the upper housing assembly.

Re: C1 Washer Pump Assembly Restoration

Today i completed the assembly. Thanks to Jay Maxwell, he confirmed the final assembly of the large spring and plunger direction inside the pump halves. I must tell you, if you need to have a system rebuilt, send it to Jay. He is the expert for sure. he has all of the special fixturing and tools to restore and rebuild these.

I decided to make a tool to set the rivets. I used a pointed drift at first but I didn't like the results. I made a small tool on my lathe to set them more properly with a curled edge to ensure a snug fit. I tested it using some of the old rivets which I drilled out to create the tubular end.

It seemed to work so I went ahead and re-set all of them on the main controller housing. I also had to relieve the reproduction cover holes so the rivets and their backup washers didn't rub on the edges of the holes, as shown on the last 2 photos in the below sequence.

I then riveted the upper pump housing using the tool. It was tricky getting the tool held firm while backing up the rivet heads.

This is the order of the large spring and white "plunger".

I used a light layer of silicone grease on the pump rubber seals then assembled the pieces to complete the assembly. It's a bit tricky to compress the large spring and then to get the retaining ring in place. I set the ring on the edge of the 4 "shelves" then set the lower pump half in proper alignment using the reference arrows, then slipped the ring up onto the 4 tabs of the lower pump half.

The full picture library is now updated on my Photobucket page as listed in the first Post, also HERE.

Unfortunately, my Vac Tank is missing it's valve so I was unable to test it here. It'll be tested on the car it belongs to later when it arrives there.

Ed, Finding documentation was the most difficult. There really is nothing.

                            2nd was peening the rivets.

3rd was getting that huge spring set and getting the 2 halves of the pump together and slipping that ring on to secure them.
